Otter

Otter
Underpass construction for otter. This mitigation work helps to keep otter away from highways.

Otter, like bats are protected under national and European legislation, and so a EPS licence may be required prior to undertaking any work on river banks or any other otter habitat. Otters are active all year round and so can be surveyed for at any time of year, unlike many other protected species which have seasonal survey constraints. Mitigation work for otters varies depending on what kind of works the development involves. If otter habitat is going to be destroyed, then new habitat will need to be created in place of the lost habitat, such as the construction of an artificial 'holt' where otters take refuge. Where highways schemes affect otter habitat, ramps and tunnels can be installed above the floodline so that otters can continue to safely navigate water courses and are not forced up on to the carriageway.
